Mrs. Jenckes’ News Agent Given Big Jobanshlt;thipurm\vr.Mrs. Jencke* Publicity Man.A rather curious bit of newspaper jossip came out of Washington recently concerning the stunt of Mrs. Virginia Jenckes, congresswoman from the Sixth Indiana district, in having on her personally-paid staff a publicity agent, who has a name that smacks of old Poland or Russia. He is labeled Byman Serkowich and the dispatch quotes him as aspiring to the strenuous aim of building he* up like Garbo. The Washington Star devoted a column to this man of the Slav-like name. The account in the Star intimates very plainly that Mrs. Jenckes personally handles the publicity material which her foreigner digs up For her, and that it is she who is really responsible for the publicity she gets.Through that publicity Mrs. Jen-ckes is made to figure very often in matters in which she has no real part and for which she actually, can not claim any sort of credit. She just simply wants to have her name in the papers! The Star says, in part: Slrkowlch is said to receive his salary personally from Mrs. Jenckes. He isn't on the pay roll. Those listed on the government pay roll are Grace York, of Virginia, and Raymond Kin-near. of Washington. Kinnear, however. is r.ot employed in her office. Just why he draws pay is not made quite clear. He apparently performs no official service. Originally Mrs. Jenckes had a Covington. Ind., man. Forrest K Livcngood. an outstanding young lawyer and World War veteran. as her secretary, but he was without publicity ideas. It is generally understood that Livengood was unwilling to take orders from Mrs. Jenckes’ young daughter, who assumed command in her mother s absence.A Orecncastle. Ind., girl formerly held a stenographic position, but she was dropped after a few weeks It is understood that a Miss Dennis, of Williamsport, Ind., has accepted a call to a stenographic position in the office and that she and her mother are here for a try-out. The congresswoman's daughter, Miss Virginia Ray Jenckes. is serving as secretary to her mother.
