Original Veale lumberowners in 1894 also ranlight and water plantSeventy-five years ago in 1894, there was in Lc Mars a lumber company under the name of Knorr and Sliaefcr.Besides owning the lumber business, they also ran the water and light plant which was serving Le Mars at that time.Actually Knorr and Shacfer were what we call pioneers in the retail lumber business, they were the first ones in that type of operation in Le Mars.In 1888, in the town of Strublc there was born to the Veale family a baby boy, William. The Veales had always been residents of this area and continued to remain here and so young Bill was raised and educated in the Iowa farm land. When he was around 21 years of age. Bill took up employment with Farley-Lotscher, a Mill works company. He was a salesman for this firm and did much traveling. In 1913, Bill decided to return to familiar surroundings and so he came back to Le Mars. The fact that Knorr and Shaefer wanted%to sell out their business came to his attention and so Bill worked out the details and bought the lumber business, he did not, however, buy the water and light plant, but dealt strictly in retail lumber andbuilding materials.Bill kept the same location as that of theLarsen studioKnorr and Shacfer Lumberyard, 18 First Avc. NE and the Veale Lumber Co. is still there today. In fact, the original building is still being used.Bill Veale had a son, Fred. And in 1935 Fred came to work in his father's lumber yard on a permanent basis.Togcfher, father and son spent many successful years in the retail business.William K. Veale died in 1957 at the age of 71. Upon his death, Fred Veale took over the lumber business and so this lumber yard has remained under one family management longer than any of the other retail lumber businesses in the city of LeMars. An interesting point to make and one that is highly complimentary to the Veale family is that Mrs. Margaret Goetzinger has been an employe of that firm for a total of 27 years.%Mrs. Goetzingcr’s sister, Clara Lucey was the original bookkeeper when Mr. Veale first opened up his business. She remained there for two years. Then Margaret came and worked for the lumber company for 10 years. She then retired from public work, married and raised a family. After 29 years, Margaret came back to the Veale Lumber Co. and has now been there for 17 consecutive years. The old saying, good help is hard to keep can surely be ruled out in this case.
