St. Francis sisters ran first LeMars hospital in early 1900sHeart hospital had a nursing school which was accredited to the Iowa School ofMedical care is indeed important to everyone. The first doctors in Lc Mars had no hospital and were required to treat their patients at home or in their offices.Thirty-one years after Lc Mars officially became a town, Rev. Herman Meis purchased 4.1 acres of land in the hopes that a hospital could some day be erectedNursing.During these years, 64 nurses weregraduated.In March 1966, the Sacred Hearthospital began to flounder financially.The sisters, after 49 years of dedicated and faithful service were no longer able to carry on their charitable work. They were forced to sell the hospital.there.It required much hard work and the enthusiasm of all to make this dream come true - but it finally did in 1923.During the 31 years between the purchase of the land and the actual building of the hospital, a small building on Central Avc. was purchased and remodeled to serve the community as a hospital.In August 1917. five Sisters of St. Francis arrived with Sister Mary Amandain charge. 1The sisters took over the operation olthe hospital after Msgr. Pape purchased it from Drs. Bellairc and Mammon.The hospital was renamed Sacred Hearthospital.People from all over the surrounding area were coming to the Lc Mars hospital and soon it became apparent that the accomodations were much loo small.In 1921, a fund raising committee was formed and the new hospital was on itsway. ... .And in April 1923,the4.1 aerosol land that Rev. Meis had purchased back in 1900During the following months, an advisory board was set up to decide whether or not the city of Lc Mars shouldpurchase the hospital.The community voted on a $300,000 bond issue Sept. 29, 1966, and a nearly unanimous 97 percent βyesβ was tallied.. On Nov. 7,1966, the board announced the appointment ,of Robert G. Shpedcr us administrator - to begin duties Nov. 16 ofthat year.Officially, Floyd Valley hospital - the new name selected by the board openedDec. 1,1966.Many changes have taken place sincethen. The hospital now has a bed capacity of 106.Many new systems of keeping the hospital clean and sanitary have been introduced and put into practice.And the expert care that the sisters first introduced to Le Mars has been continued by the willing and capable staff of the new Vnllav hosnital.
