Lakeside is Le Mars’ only countryside motel with lakeThe American family is definitely a traveling family. More people are out discovering their country than ever before. The most commonly used form of transportation is the automobile. Hie car is fine for the traveling, but unlike the passenger trains, airplanes and modem buses, they are not equipped to provide rest and relaxation for the travelers. In the last few years motels have been springing up all across the continent. What a convenience they are — the drive-in hotels. Since Le Mars is situated at the junction of two heavily traveled highways with many visitors passing through, it was only sensible that a motel be constructed to serve the traveling motorists. The Lakeside motel wasbuiltjustahalf mile east of the city limits on highway 3.Bob Wright was the first owner and manager- He originally named his motel the Wright Motor Court-For three years Bob was in this business and then in 1953 he sold his motel to Mr. and Mrs. Carol Parkinson, who are still the owners. The Lakeside Motel consists of a 12 unit motel building, the managers apartment, one cottage, two house trailers and two summer cottage units.Only the motel building is open year round. The other units are merely seasonal. At one time, the motel housed the famous Parkinson musical collection. This collection includes over 500 instruments of various size, shape and musical quality. This collection is now located in the Plymouth County Historical Museum.
