R. Haas, Dan Burem, Curt F razier, Frank Eichorn and Charles Hurd. Haas was the marshal or chief.May we all have the spirit of those leaders of the.past to insure for tiie future, a continued growth and prosperity fot the genera] welfare and well being of all those in our community and surrounding communities. Those leaders of the past are to be commended and congratulated for the fine leadership they have gjven us.Respectfully yours' 1mVtGRADUALLY THE department has been built up to its present strength of 19 men.Activity by the department probably was highest in the 1920’s when much effort was expended in putting bootleggers out of business. Five men were shot md illed by policemen in 1920 and 1921. Two policemen were seriously wounded in the same period.Prior to 1922 jobs as policemen were political plumbs but that was changed in 1922 when a civil service commission was established. Only the police chief’s position is controlled bv the mayor and the chief can retain his rating of patrol man if removed from the chief’s position by the mayor. The city’s first police matron, Mrs. Emma Burkey, was appointed in 1922 but she resigned in July, 1923.MURDERS IN Marshalltown were fairly common until the last 25 or o0 years. Since then three murders have occurred in the I city. A bootlegger was killed in 1926, a razor killing occurred in 1943 and a man killed his former-wife’s boy friend in a tavern Christmas Eve, 1949, by stabbing him in the abdomen with a pocket knife.F our policemen staged a strikeiTl 1Q97 nofiiolw*. When the police got its first motor vehicle, a fireman was assigned as driver. -At present the department has two squad cars and a three-wheel motorcycle.Radio equipment was installed in the station and the squad cars in 1930. Police departments in other cities, sheriff offices here and in adjacent counties and highway pa trot cars and stations all can be reached by radio.Since 1911, when the first title chief of police was given in Marshalltown, the following men have held that position: Michael Clark, 1911-13.W, M.
