ita Value in the Household Is Not Gen erally Understood. Very few housekeepers understand the full value of crude petroleum in the household. It is not always easy to get the crude oil, and when obtained it is touch more expensive than kerozens, a pint bottle costing from 15 to 95 centa in the drug stores, where it is sold. It is one of the best oils that comes for oiling hard wood floors. It not only cleans out the dust, but it gives a soft, new polish to old furniture, which it is dressed with, and, unlike other oils, it does not stay on the surface, but evapo rates rapidly with slight rubbing. The hard wood finish on the interior of houses, which has become scratched, may be more successfully treated with crude oil than with anything evee that we know of. It should be applied with a soft flannel cloth, and rubbed in with shard cotton cloth or a pad made of cotton cloth. The use of crude petroleum in cases of rheumatism and some skin diseases is well known, and, strange as it may seem, is of very ancient date. For many centuries the Balmwell, of St. Cather ine’s, has existed, near Edinburg, over the coal mines, and has been famous for its cures. It is now known to be noth ing else than a petroleum well The well was paid to have come into exist ence from a portion of holy oil accident ally dropped on that spot by Saint Catherine, and as a result of her prayers. It was for centuries a resort of pilgrims, and its miraculous cures were famous, —N. Y. Tribune.
