A few miles from j the former place, the sands one form*, steep cliffs, and at one place we sawti i column standing out by itself, 44 feel;3f i high, and only 6 feet square at the base, j “,e I Itis much broader at the top, and it is !;11 strange that it does not tumble down.— { *lt;11 At a little distance it has the appearance .« I of a column erected by art for some moil-j amenta! purpose. Copper ore Iim been _ j discovered in considerable quantities at ° | a place called Mount Sterling, but the j 23, mine is not now worked. Experiment:; proves it to be of about the same value :^ \ as the Mineral Point ore, or about-20 to d 25 per cent., pure copper. Iron ore is also found in many places on tho ridge. jm j especially at a point three miles south oi j LS; Mount Sterling, where there are in-j [\ d i dications of a largo body of ore. It lias ; *,\ never been explur-d or proved. At Mr,; ijMiller’s, on this road, are a number of ancient artificial mounds, in the form of birds with out-spread wings; and here we had the good fortune to obtain some of the speckled trout that abound in the clear cold streams running off from this ‘nridge. This fine fish is found through- j. _ * ■ « * a m . V.] out Northern Wisconsin, but is not found j *lt; in the Southern part of the State. At r-1 this place we descended into a remarka-k — HIM « »f:bJu cave, formed in the soft sandstone, j.:; the roof being supported by some hard * i layers interposed between it and the su*!£ | perincumbent limestone. The entrance J is large and of an oval form; the descent i ^ so gradual that cattle and horses have J Wlt; _ | been known to enter the cave. Wo saw j ^ 1 traces of lire where persons had encamp -;ed to enjoy the coolness and protection j ‘! of the rocks. As vre descended, a sud-!el■ den coldness came over us as if entering j ■ . an ice-house.
