gates all tell him he is more than mortal, are we to wonder that the pleasing story finds belief. Why denounce and quarrel with these beings, and leave the cause intact ? Private property is the cause; these the results. Private property ever did, and ever must produce its aristocracies of of wealth and station—and he who combats these results yet still opposes the communal stall, knows not what he does. The aristocracy neither can, nor will, oppose the acquirement of property by the people. That the peoplehave the means, behold the millions they have spent on strikes, and the millions they now spend on drinks, tobacco, and other frivolities. One of the aristocracy said to a gentleman sometime ago, “ You tell us that the people are starving, how is that 1 We are receiving some sixteen millions annually in tax on drinks and tobacco, and these are used as articles of luxury by these same working classes ; we do not understand this, a people in the extremity of distress spending this amount in luxuries that damage them, is incredible. We doubt your tales of distress/'Lord --s. when appealed to in favour of communitysaid: The people are satisfied with the presentstate of things ; the change you mention could be accomplished without our aid or consent, if they really deserved it. We know what they wastes We know what they have been able to spend in strikes. We know what, they deposited in the savings hanks, and we know, also, if the desire was at all common, they would com- -bine to effect such a change as you contemplate. The people do not want it, so you must excuse my assistance to a cause which the people are careless of.”What answer can the friends of community of property make to all this ? Is it not really tiresome to hear the people talking of oppression, while you know 1 they have the means of ridding themselves of it ? Political freedom will come before long, and we tell the careless people before hand, that their condition will not be sensibly improved as to food, and other matters —they will be able to hold up their heads a little more in the world; but, until they get communal properties they will not be free. You say there is no suitable plan before the world; nothing worthy of the people, [f the Redemption Society is naught in your eyes, you are at least bound to present a better, and not only a better, but one that shall work itself while the brave people stand by with folded arms and god-like indifference.
