3reCoroner of Douglas County, Kansas. This contract is the kind of collar that the county officials who ride on free passes wear. If this kind of contract is signed and sealed by county officials in other counties and I know it to be a fact. The question naturally arises in one’s mind who and how many of our county officials have signed similar contracts in consideration of the pass that carries them over the different lines of railroad. We all know what action Coroner Hornor took on the killing of Mr. Chevalier, but don’t know the motives for his action; but by inference. In connection with this same subject I might say that it is currently reported on the street that our sheriff is collecting evidence to be used in the interest of the railroad company in case a criminal prosecution should be commenced againstwould have them do it. In the language of Senator Ingalls, “The Republican party of this county and State must adopt the live issues of the day and not depend on dead issues and sentiment.”J. H. Shimmons.. Kleetricity Produced by Water. The paper mill at Moutier, In the department of Isere, France, is an interesting object of the^tpplication of electrical machinery. The power is derived from the Dome-non, a stream flowing into the Isere. ‘ The available fall is 230 feet, the water being led to the turbine house In a conduit of steel plate TOO yards long. The available energy amounts to a maximum of 300 horse power. The dynamos generating the current revolve at 240 turns per minute, and those which are actuated by it in the mill at 300, giving out a maximum of horse power. The length of the line is three miles, and its resistance (including dynamos) 6.3 ohms. The winter of 1SS9-90 was so severe thatfor four constant ice and snow which covered the wires and insulators, the current was never inter* rupted for a moment, nor have the thunder storms in summer caused any Injury or interruption. There is a telephone wire carried on the same posts as the conductor, which enables the necessary communications to be kept up. The machines work night and day and require only four attendants, two at the generating station and two at the receiving station.—New Yprk Telegram.the employes running the train thatkilled Mr/Chevalier. ......................I don’t know that this charge is Reeled traffic was impossible true. If it is, it is another pointer in . months; but in spite of the conthe pass and contract direction. The county coroner having refused to do anything in this killing, is it not the basiness of the county attorney to take some action in the matter?Within the past five years the iabroad assessors of the State have cut down the valuation of railroad property in this county from 8658,333-88 in 1886 to 8525.850 in 1891, being a reduction of 8132,483.00 being a loss to the city and county of (87,474) seven thousand, four hundred aud seventy-four dollars for this one year, figured on the tax levy of last year. This saving of 87,474 to the railroad company nas to be added to the tax of the people of this county. I think I hear some one say why does not the couty board take an appeal from the railroad assessors to the State board of equalization? Suppose they did, what good would it do? The Secretary of State, State Auditor and State Treasurer comprise the board of equalization. All three of these officials are on the board of railroad assessors and are a majority of theboard. Does anyone suppose fora minute that the railroad managers have nothing to do in bringing about these results and that the State and county officials are as free from bias as Dr. Hornor would have people believe he is? I believe Dr. Hornor is just as good as other people and no better, and it is the duty of every tax payer in the county to watch and criticize the actions of their public servants An honest, upright official will bear(First PublUhed June 22, 189!.)Sheriffs Sale.♦ #• ^Robert Koblson A Son,VSSam Watts.By virtue of ax execution tomedirected and Issued out of the clerk's ofllce of the District Court In and for the county of Douglas and state of Kansas, the Fc urth Judicial District, on an abstract of judgment obtained before John Chariton, a Justipe of the J*eace tn and for Law-irndhip, In said County of Douglas and State of Kansas, In the above entitledaction I will on Friday, the 3rd day of July, A.
