By ANDREA FERRETTI (Staff Writer) A 15-year-old was suspend ed from school and began walking the streets. In a few days he may be sent to prison. Another teenager missed 23 of 50 school days. His parents did not know. School District’s 205’s truant officer did nothing about it, accord ing to Louise Wilder, city hu man relations officer. The boy tried the Job Corps and failed. Now he’s back on the streets. A TASK FORCE to work with the school district on ef fective counseling of the prob lem child was established Thursday night by the Gales burg Human Services Adviso ry Committee. The force will study the situation and make recommendations to the dis trict. Members of the task force are Gene Denisar, Lolita Junk, Gerald Gant and Irene Ponce. They will work with Mrs. Wilder and Pamela Davidson, city human services directors. At present at Galesburg High School, there are six deans who are responsible for discipline, referrals, college counseling, some intelligence testing and writing recom mendations, said Denisar, as sistant princial at the high school. Each serves about 300 students. ‘The deans struggle to get as much done as they can,” he commented. “IT SOUNDS as though there is a great need for more counselors,” said William Kel sey, committee member. This is one of the problems the task force will attempt to advise the district on, the committee decided. Denisar also mentioned ‘an alternative school which might be developed. Some cities have special teachers trained to handle students with prob lems. The alternative school may be for pregnant girls or persons with criminal records or other problems, he said.
