IK HIM FOB A RIVER PIRATERANCHER AT WINES AP TAKES A SHOT AT SUSPICIOUS LOOKING CHARACTER GOING DOWN THE COLUMBIA.A “juicy” story has just floated down the Columbia river and reached Wenatchee this morning. It is one in which the characters are the C. O. agent at Chelan Falls, a rancher and a shotgun. The agent at Chelan Falls, Smith by name, started for Wenatchee the other day in a small boat. Dr. Austin, who lives at Winesap, noticed the boat going by and as it was the some color as the one owned by the Chelan Falls ferry, he believed that the rower was a boat thief. Going to the phone he notified the people ! below* to hail the man in the boat.: George Goman was the first man to get into action. Goman apparently was of the opinion that a man who would steal boats was good enough for wars, strategems or spoils,” or any other old thing, so he pulled out a big blunderbuss in the shape of a shotgun and sent a volley after the 1 supposed river pirate. At this junc- j ture, it is said that Smith invited Goman to a hand to hand conflict if he would agree to lay down his ar-! tillery. It all developed later that ! Smith, instead of being a “pirut” was in reality only a harmless agent of the C. O. company, wrho was trying to get to Wenatchee to make the train.
