18 • SPOTLIGHT June 26, 2003FESTIVE FUN‘New vaudeville’ to open Music Hall’s seasonRenowned actor, and “new vaude-villian” Bill Irwin and legendary star of stage and film Fayard Nicholas will join artists of the Portsmouth Percussive Dance Festival (PPDF) to kick-off The Music Hall's 125th anniversary season.The production “Music Hall Follies: A Vaudeville in 9 Acts will have its world premiere on Saturday, June 28 at 8 p.m. at The Music HallBill Irwin is an award-winning actor and clown artist. His original clown show “Largely/New York ran on Broadway, and received five Tony Award nominations and he received a Tony Award for “Fool Moon,” created with clown David Shiner.On stage, he has appeared in manyplays including “Waiting for Godot,” “Accidental Death of an Anarchist,” and “The Tempest. He was most recently seen on Broadway in “The Goat,” co-starring with Sally Field.Irwin has dozens of film credits including “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “Eight Men Out, and “Popeye” and he tap danced in the film “Stepping Out with Liza Minelli.” He has appeared extensively on television including “3rd Rock from the Sun, “Northern Exposure,” andbrother believed in presenting always a picture of beauty and style, grace and poise as well as profound entertainment. “Stormy Weather” features their now-classic, breathtaking staircase routine.The Music Hall Follies will also highlight the artists and creators of the acclaimed “Clara’s Dream,” a jazz nutcracker including tap pioneer Brenda Bufalino, rising tap star Josh Hilberman, classical tap dancer Dean Diggins, physical comedian“The Cosby Show.Fayard Nicholas, whose career spanned more than six decades, made up one-half of one of the most beloved dance teams in the history of dance — the Nicholas Brothers. Legends in their own time, they are best known for their unforgettable appearances in Hollywood musicals of the 1930s and ‘40s. such as “The Big Broadcast of 1936,” “Sun Valley Serenade, “Orchestra Wives,” and, most notably, “Stormy Weather.Their artistry and choreographic brilliance, as manifested in their unique style — a smooth mix of tap, ballet, and acrobatic moves — have astonished and excited vaudeville, theater, film, and television audiences all over the world.
