JOLIVER CAREY MURDERED IN ACCOMAC CO.Pocomoke Man Found With Bullet Through Brain Near Parksley Last Friday Night.MRS. MYRTLE MELVINCHARGED.WITH CRIMEOliver Carey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Carey, of this city, is dead, having been found with a bullet in his head—who fired the shot that killed him, is as yet unknown.Mr. Carey’s body was discovered by a negro, Dod Hall, as it lay in a ditched auto, near Parksley, Va., on Friday of last week, Hall reporting his find to the Parksley authorities.Investigations have been in progress ever since the occurrence in an effort to unearth the perpetrator of the crime, and arrests have been made. One woman and two negroes are now being held. The woman is Mrs. Myrtle Melvin, wife of Ingalls R. Melvin, formerly of this city, but now of Wilmington, Del. Just why she was arrested is not exactly known. Possibly the best reason is that she was found in the r [ neighborhood where the killing took place; and, as her history is pretty well known, the same tallying pretty closely to that of the deceased, she was arrested on suspicion. vShe began to tell, under examination, conflicting stories. First she* claimed to have been in a car with J, some companions who came across[the dead body of the victim, and all j becoming panio Stiricken fled. She i , made her way to a farm house inquiring the way to Parksley, but said nothing about the shooting. Then she said she was in the car with Carey when he was shot, and that a negro jumped on the running board and fired the fatal bullet as they were passing thru Whitesville, a negro settlement near Parksley. Her evidence was enough for the Virginia authorities to hold her, and the Commonwealth Attorney, Jeff. 1 F. Walter has filed formal charges ' of murder against her, holding two negroes as material witnesses. The whole affair, it is thought, is the outcome of illicit traffic in intoxicants. In the car in which Carey was found there were thirty-two half gallon fruit jars filled with com whiskey. It is the opinion of many the killing is the result of a bootleggers’ war, and that Carey was probably, poaching on somebody else’s territory. It is said he had made many enemies, and that there was a conspiracy to “get him.”The whole affair is shrouded in a n [mystery which may never be cleared '• j up. Carey’s body was brought to this* city last Saturday and interment ! made on Monday. He leaves a widow| and two children, besides his father e i and mother .
