January 1. 1924. the total population was 112,826.0X1, the Bureau's figures show. In the lat half of 1923 a net increase of 1,162,000 was recorded.This was the greatest growth ior a six months period in the uation’s history, the Bureau's report states.The unusual increase is attributed to the heavy excess of immigration over emigration and the lowest death rate which ever prevailed over a similar period in this country.There can be little doubt that prohibition contributed to this record increase in population in that it is an important factor in rontriKiitin it to rroiul litllfll In.surance companies long ago discovered that total abstainers arc by far the hot risks. Statistics covering a period of many years show that the total abstainer's life expectancy exceeds that of the drinker even though he be a moderate drinker.It is also interesting to nole that prohibition has not retarded immigration nor increased emigration.
