NEAR KILLS ANearly a dozen good men had a narrow escape last Sunday evening at American No. 2 mine when a car was shoved into the sump on their heads.Peb Conrad, Engineer Wilhelm, Night Boss Walter Puckett, and several other men were in the sump working. The sump is about ten or fifteen feet deep. Two loaded cars got loose and bumped an empty into the sump. Peb was caught and crushed against a 2 x 4 which forunate ly gave way and saved him. Walter Puckett was less lucky and received severe gashes on the head from which he was unconscious for several hours. He was cared for by Dr. Gardnerr ✓m . mrmm ' — —Itmm* —»■' - ■
