GUTHRIE, June 24——4 —Con victed by a federal court jury last month of using the mail to defraud in connection with al teged dishonest cotton sales, John P. Liddell and D. Vernon Liddell were sentenced to five years in the federal penitentiary at Leav enworth and fined $500 each by Judge Edgar S. Vaught in federal court here today. sentence of the two defend ants closed a case which recalled in testimony the attempted rob bery of the First National bank at Marietta last November. Haney Liddell, also implicated in the cotton fraud charges, died from sunshot wounds received in the holdup. James R. London, the fourth defendant in the case, pleaded guilty to the charges last March and was sentenced to serve three years in the federal penitentiary. Post office inspectors alleged that the quartet left Marietta in 1926, went to Lawton, and start ed a cotton brokerage business. It was charged that they filled orders received on the strength of excellent samples with cheap, shoddy cotton.
