Ex-Mayor of Portland and Prominent Citizen Passes Away. Portland Me., June 25.—Ex-Mayor Hol man S. Melcher, for # years engaged in the wholesale grocery business in this city, died, today, aged 1 years. A widow and daughter survive him. He was mustered Into the 2th Maine at the opening of the Civil War as a cor poral, and was quickly appointed first lieutenant of Co. F and later captain. ie 3 promoted major, April 9, 1805, for brave and meritorious service on Five Forks and Appomatox. He served in both branches of the city coqoneell in 18 sand 189), he was registrar of the Maine Commandery of the Loyal Legion, was a member of the G A. B. Masonic bodies, and the Free street Bap tist church. He was a vice president of the Hoard of Trade and has been active in several business organizations. He serv ed one term in the Legislature in 1898.
