[Nows and Courier, 22d.]Gen. William N. Taft, the well*known Republican leader of this city,died Ht 11 o’clock yesterdny morningat the farm ol Col. T. B. Johnston, near Mayesville, Snmter County, where he had gone last Sunday for the benefit of his health. His death is attributed to malaria, with which his 8ystem had long been impregnated, and which bad latteily gieatly impaired his health. His remains will be brought down Iroin Mayesville by train this morning and will be inteired in this city.It was learned last night that he wasborn at Providence, R. I , in 1847, and that he enlisted in Company C, Rhode Island artillery, when he was 18 yearsof age.In the spring of 1881 he was appointed postmaster for Charleston by President Gaifield and served the Government in that capacity until the end of President Arthur's administration, when the late Mr. B. F. linger succeeded him, having been appointed postmaster by President Cleveland.He was colonel of the 1st regiment of colored tloops, and subsequently became brigadier general of the National Gnnrd, from which position lie took bis title of general in later life.Gen. Taft was a candidate at the time of his death for the Charleston postmastership,and was regarded as tho most formidable competitor in tho race. Hie death now leaves the field open toMajor Mansfield, Dr. Crum and thenumerous other candidates.
