EDITOR’S NOTE: This is an other in a series of articles on members of the City Council with the purpose of acquainting the citizens of Robstown with the men at the helm of the city government. Cosme G. Pena, a Robstown bar ber whose ambition is to “do any thing that will help the town” is serving his first term as city coun cilman. Pena, the only grandfather on the council, serves as co-commis sioner of streets and parks along with T. L. Turner. Although maintaining and build ing streets are important, Pena would like to see the city develop parks and playgrounds and carry out a recreation program for the youngsters. However, he adds quickly “when we have the money.” Pena has always been interested in recreation. He is president of the board of directors in charge of an undeveloped park out west of the city limits off Avenue B giv en years ago by W. R. (Bill) Grif fin, a former real estate developer. The board has $200 in the bank, but will need up to $2,000 to dev elop the park as they feel that it should be developed. A native of Starr County, Pena was born at Rio Grande City, the son of the late Bernardino Pena, farmer. The family later moved to Falfurrias where the elder Pena did carpentry work and later farm ed again. His mother now lives in Robstown at 316 West Avenue D. Pena himself moved to Runge where he opened a barber shop and married the former Delrina Ramon of Roma. They moved to Robstown in 1935. Pena has oper ated a barber shop on Avenue A since that time. The Penas have three daughters, Mrs. Otilia Garcia, Mrs. Hortencia Benavides, and Eva Pena, all of Robstown, and one adopted son, Ricardo, who this week is attend ing the boy scout summer camp at Lake Corpus Christi. Pena is serving his third term as president of the Sons of Hidal go Society and is a member of the Club Padres de Familia (Parents Club). Last year and the year be fore, he served on the school equalization board. He has also been a member of the equalization board of the city. Pena is a memer of the First Christian Church. COSME G.
