TOKYO, Japan — Cpl. Robert Virkstis, a former minor league pitcher, was one of the crew of a B-26 that was credited, June 18, with killing 250 of 500 Reds planning to attack a United Nations position in Korea. He was the gunner, as sisting in plastering an area with bombs and machine gun bullets to break up the attack that was massing against U. N. troops on the Korean west coast. As a reward for their successful mission, members of the crew were given a rest trip to Tokyo. Virkstis, who lives at Grand Rap ids, Mich., is carried on the National Defense Service List of Asheville (Tri-State). He was with Green ville, S. C., and Zanesville, C., in 1948, Greenwood and Three Rivers in 1949 and Greenwood again in 1950 before being released to Ashe ville shortly before he entered the service in January 1951. John, a younger brother and also a pitcher, is in the service, too. He belongs to Memphis (Soutern).
