While Under the Influence of Liquor He Admits His Guilt. The Lafayette Sunday Leader, in its account of the arrest of Reed, the body-snatcher, says: While drinking, he admitted com plicity in the deed to Stoops, and also his efficiency in procuring abortions, offering to share the proceeds with him if he knew of those who might need his professional services. The suppo sition by some is that Reed was in the city in pursuit of his nefarious busi ness. We will state here that in the grave desecrations we have specified, Reed was aided by several medical students of Fort Wayne. The follow ing letter from his wife is another evidence of woman’s devotion. Only a portion of it alludes to the crime, but that much of it is quite pointed: Roanoke, Ind., June 9, 1879.—My Dear FE. L.: I received your letter yesterday, but very sorry and much surprised to hear of your trouble. Oh, it grieves me so much to think of your having to lay in a swamp, and subsist on such as roots. Oh, that makes my heart sink. We have plenty to eat, but sometimes we have not much ap ute, though we are kindly treated. am glad you have found a good friend, I hope you will make your self worthy of his friendship. I am out of heart, but if I would come, and you would have to get away from there, as you did from Lakeville, what would become of us? Oh! .., it makes me heart-sick to think we must have this awful trouble. You may keep in good heart. I have tried hard to be cheerful, but when I read your letters, it is too much. Mr. and Mrs. Rue have been to see us. The children and me went to Mr. Stouder’s last week. I thought he would buy those notes, but he would not. I saw Adams -he would not pay me anything. Mr. Fox is living in the house we used to live in. Dr. Putt is going to Wayne. Dr. Myers is going to leave Wayne, I forget where he is going. The folks were very much surprised because we did not come back up there. I am up writing. The children have come back from Sabbath school with a little visitor. They are just below the win dow playing. I would have went to Sabbath school too, but John and Sarah are here. I am_ teacher of a male class when I go. I wrote to um
