Steamboat Accident.Between ten and eleven o’clock on Monday night a collision ©ccured at Piasa chute, five miles above Alton, between the Alton and Grafton packet Spread Eagle and the tow-boat Beaver and barges, 'Fhe night was dark, and although the lights of the boats could be seeii from each other, it. seems no one had any idea that they were so close together. The forward barge of the Beaver struck the Eagle On the larboard aide, about the boilers, crushing in the cabin bulwarks, and carrying off five stanch-eons. Four of tlie brace chains were also torn away. A white roustabout, namod Robert Allen, unfortunately got caught between the boats and was instantly crushed to death. He had 110 relations in this country, but it is thought that he had a fondly somewhere in England. His remains were left at Altou for interment and inquest.George Peterson, a colored roustabout, is also missing, and it is supposed that he fell overboard and was drowned.The damage to the Spread Eagle is estimated at about $500, but the Beaver and barges sustained no injury.Oapt.
