The Giddings, Texas, Times News - Thursday, June 24, 1971 - Page 5 (April 15, 1892 Issue) Mr. C. W. Sinks, an old Texan, died this morning at 2 o’clock from paralysis. He is probably the last man to die who ever sat in cabinet with president Houston. Mr. Sinks was a native of Clermont county, O., and came to Velasco in the fall of 1836. Went to Columbia and was left in charge of some government business when it removed to Houston. He was as by Major Barr as chief clerk in the post office department, and on Major Barr’s leaving the country for several months was appointed ‘‘acting postmaster general,’’ and among his old papers were found several in vitations to cabinet rong in one of which he made the proposition to start hacks to carry the mails, then up to that time having been carried on horseback. He was there fore the first man to start the mails of the republic of Texas on wheels. He moved to Austin with the government and was head of the postal affairs while it was a bureau of the state department. I was married to Miss Julia Lee of the family of revolu tionary fame in October 1841. In 1842 he went to La Gran and embarked in the mercantile business and lived there until eight years since when the couple gave up housekeeping and came to Giddings to live with their son, Ed. R. Sinks, who is a lawyer of prominence. Mr.Sinks was 80 years old last February. He kept his fac ulties to a remarkable degree and was strong up to Saturday — when he was stricken with paralysis. His wife, who survives him, is a writer and authoress of some ability. The funeral this afternoon at 5 o’clock was con ducted by Dr. LeFavre of Aus tin and was largely attended, the business houses of the city and the public school all closin g to pay respect to the honore ead.
