John Herman Beckman age 79 years, civil war veteran and one of the state’s most prominent men her Sunday night at 10:45 o’clock at Ferdinand. He was the first child born at Ferdinand, Ind, and who was the oldest of five children born to Mr and Mrs GJ. Beckman pioneer settlers who came from Baden, Baden, Germany, in 1812. At the age of 18 years, Mr. Beckman enlisted in the Civil war August 12 1862, and was made first sergeant of Co E 91 Reg Ind. He received a discharge June 26 1865. He was a lifelong democrat and a real American. He was one of the most progressive and public spirited citzen of Dubois county. For twenty years he was a mem ber of the county council of Du bois county and it was during his adminstration that the beautiful courthouse of Jasper was erected due to his activiies Mr. Beckman was known for years and years as ‘‘tobacco king”’ southern Indiana, having bought, tobacco since 25 years of age. The funeral services were held at St. Ferdinand church at § o’clock Wednesday morning and ‘burial made in the cemetery there
