NOTHING’S THE MATTERAssistant Adjutant General Ewart, Sent To InvestigateOutrages in Eldorado, Reports No Disturbance.PERSONS ARE UNKNOWNSchool Stays Closed, Citizens Pled, Whites Deplore Everything, but There Seems to Be No Redress for Damages Done.Assistant Adjutant General Ewart has finished the investigation of the outrages committed by the white people against colored citizens of Eldorado and now rests from his labors. He reports to the governor that, in his opinion, there is no race war in Saline county; that the imfamous destruction of property and the closing of the negro industrial school and the fleeing of more than a hundred colored citizens from the the town of Eldorado was caused by young, irresponsible and unknown persons; that the citizens of Saline county deplore these lawless acts, etc., etc., etc.Assistant Adjutant General Ewart failed to discover any provocation offered by the colored citizens to their persecutors; he says the inmates of the industrial school left on the advice of the sheriff of Saline county; he could not find out by what authority this sheriff, paid in part by the colored people to preserve the peace and protect their lives and property, failed to perform his duty.In the meantime, the industrial school stands closed, with much of its property ruined, and there is no redress in sight, inasmuch as an official investigation fails to discover any one who is responsible. The same state of affairs exists in regard to the property of private citizens, which has been trespassed upon, partly or wholly destroyed or sold by the frightened owners at a great loss. No redress is in sight for the many homes broken up, and the perpetrators of this unspeakable outrage are—if Assistant Adjutant General Ewart’s reported investigation is to be the ultimatum—to go scot free.Tjie report closes with the comforting assurance that the citizens—the white ones presumably, since these are the only ones left—of Eldorado and Saline county will endeavor to stop all future lawless acts. s.
