(Picture on Page 2) By JUNE SMITH News Women’s Editor “To hear Grace Foote talk about the history and achieve ments of Port Arthur, ‘‘you'd think she rode into town on the first train with Arthur Stilwell.”’ That was typical of the praise heaped upon Grace Foote Thursday night as she was hon ored as Outstanding Woman for 1972 by the Port Arthur Board of Realtors at a testimonial din ner held in the Driftwood Motor Hotel Describing her romance with Port Arthur were numerous friends and relatives. Pegging her at joining Stilwell on the first train was John Ayres, edi tor emeritus of The Port Arthur News, with whom Mrs. Foote has worked for more than 45 years. Approximately 250 persons watched as she was presented a plaque by enwee Wes Spiegel, realtor board vice president. The award ‘s part of the organi zation’s ‘Make America Bet ter’ project, initiated one and a half years ago honoring a woman and a man annually in recognition of ‘outstanding leadership ability, distinguished and unselfish service given this community. Previous recipients have been Mrs. M. H. (Edna) Jagce and David Provost. Included in the audience were delegations from the City of Port Arthur, The News, First Christian Church, Lions Club and Pilot Club. Mayor Bennis Sadler an nounced that Mrs. Foote will also receive an award for 30 years or more as a distin guished citizen. “I’'ve been waiting for this 35 years,”’ said Philip Foote, the honoree's son, in opening a laugh-filled ‘This Is Your Life” presentation. Among participants was Jack Scott, publisher of The News, who referred to Mrs. Foote as “one of the finest women I've ever worked with. Ayres said she “had covered everything from marriages to murders” in a multi-faceted ca reer with The News. He quoted her favorite expression as “I've been on this job a hundred years... and that was just as woman's editor.” Mayo Wells, News editor, said, “She has outlasted a hand ful of editors and publishers.” He detailed Mrs. Foote's more recent newspaper posts as edi tor of TV Time and present edi tor of Box 7-8-9, special editions, “Woman's World, ’ and “more and more CavolScade. Dr. James R. Wright, min ister of First Christian Church of which she is an active member, gave the invocation His wife, a participant in the program, said of her church in volvement, “In spite of family, job, civic and social activities, her church work has never taken a back seat. ’ Mrs Foote is a church trustee and member of the board and presently teaches the Crusaders Class.
