inegro soldierHAPPENINGS OVERSEAS: Of the28 newspaper correspondents assigned to the assault forces which made the first landings in Normandy, none was colored. Hence specific reports about the doings of Negro units on the beachheads of fortress Europe are few.Pictures of Negro coast guardsmen and medical detachments tn action have been released by the OWI; but aside from these, no news concerning the part played by black troops has been released. Edward B. Toles, of the Defender, and Randy Dixon, of the Courier, are both In London. Questioning correspondents who were in the first wave of Allies, they relay the information to us that Indian seamen, colored ground troops with the third Canadian Division, West Indian airmen with the RAF, U. S. Negro mess attendants, petty officers and merchant seamen are known to have participated in the storming of the coasts; while engineer battalions, quartermasters and others moved in after the initial blow was struck to build air fields, evacuate the wounded and keep the avalanche of supplies moving.The 332nd Fighter Squadron, all colored, is in action in the' European theatre of operations. Its recent job has been to protect bomber flights on their missions. Enroute to Munich, last week they dispersed an attacking formation of 20 Me'sserschmitts, destroying five of them. Col. B. O. Davis, Jr., is in command of the squadron.The* 99th Pursuit Squadron continues its yeoman work in Italy. The men are now flying P-4I(Continued on Page Eight) .
