Shelton, who was here last- September on his return walking trip from New York to San Francisco, was here yesterday at noon. ’ Shelton is walking to LeGrand. la., from New York, a distance of 2414 miles both ways. He is following the Lincoln Highway route. Me has made two record-breaking walking trips this year in the interest of the New York Evening Mail. He walked to Albany, a distance nr 150 miles, and to Washington, D. G., a distance of 22T miles. Both the above jaunts were return hikes. Shelton is one of the best known walkers in America, and competed in a number of six-day go- as-y on-please races when they were in. vogue a number of years back.WALES 802 MILES OF DISTANCE IN EIGHTEEN DAYS.The'big 60-day walking event-being promoted by the New York Daily News, is stirring up a great deal of interest along the Lincoln Highway, judging from the manjr newspaper accounts from cities through which Mr. Shelton has passed. That he is a “ wonder“ at,walking is proved by the way he is annihilating the Y2-07' miles from New York City to LeGrand. The Reporter prints a letter from him written Wednesday at South Bend, Ind., and in it he tells some' of the records he is making.The first lap of t-be hike will end at the Reporter office and the minute he arrives a telegram will be started to the New York News apprizing that paper of the fact. Just when he will arrive is problematical, but no doubt next Thursday or Friday. Some means will be found to notify those who care to see Shelton finish his long grind, and inasmuch as he has put LeGrand on the map it is proposed that we give him a hearty welcome.Rural Carrier Examination.The United States Civil Service Commission has announced an examination for the county of .Marshall, Iowa, to be held at Marshalltown, on July 22, 1916, to fill the position of rural carrier at LeGrand and vacancies that may later oc-cur on rural routes from other post offices in the above - mentioned county. The .examination will be open only to malwcitizens who are actually domiciled-in the territory of a post office in the county and who meet the other requirements set forth in Form No. 1977. This form and application blanks may be obtained from the offices mentioned above or from the United States Civil Service Commission at Washington. D. C.
