FATAL SHOOTINGNear Petit in Sister County of Daviess.Drunken How Ends fn The Fatal Wounding of SteveClayton. iAt an ice cream supper at the residence of Augusta Nischan, who lives near iVtit in Daviess county, last Saturday night a drunken row which was started by a number of the attendants resulted in Steve Clayton being fatally wounded by a pistol shot tired by Bernard Is»hg. Clayton was conveyed to Owensboro where he died at 12 o’clock Monday.The difficulty grew out of an old row. It was free predicted by many of the neighbors of the man at whose jhouse the ice cream supper was being had that trouble would be the outcome of the gathering.It,is alleged that Long'pplied several vile epithets to Clayton, pre-j vious to the shooting. Clayton told j Long he would not allow him to curse him and started towards him, it is said. Long pulled a pistol from i his pocket and fired one bullet at Clayton, which took effect in his abdomen. It is claimed that Long hadbeen disorderly at the dance and there had lieen much trouble preceding the shooting. Long does not bear a very good reputation forI peace. ' ,Vm ' ** ICoroner Hayden held an inquestover the body of Claton Tuesday—morning. The verdict was that he came to his death from being shot by Barney Is»ng. Several witnesses were examined, none of whom could testifiy to having seen the shot fired. They stated that it was intensely dark and that Long and Clayton were grappled in such a way that it was impossible to have seen Long fire the shot. They testified that two shots were fired, after which the ! men rolled over in’.theroad and Clayton wrested a pistol from Long’s hands and threw it over the fence. Long declared that he intended to kill Clayton.Long has left the country and notrace of him has been found although the officers have been making diligent inquires every -since the death of Clayton. A number of cards containing a description of Long have been sent out from the office of Sheriff Short to points all over the country and it is ex-peeled that some results will bein n ft*w
