At Whittington, Lichfield, yesterday, while the recruits of the 3rd Staffordshire Militia were practising firing exercise with dummy, cartridges, one of the men fired a live cartridge. The bullet went through the head of Private William Hill, who was cleaning his bayonet in one of the tents. He lies in the garrison hospital in a precarious condition.It is not known how the live cartridge came to be mixed with the dummies.
