HORRIBLE HATHAWAY, The Sickening Revelations Made In Regard to..His Dreadful Deeds by His Wife, Which is True Show Him to be.a Monster of Iniquity Who Should Be Put. Out of the Way as Soon as Possible —A Little Boy. Murdered by His Father—Other News, OR. HATHAWAY'S REPUTED WIFE MAKES FURTHER REVELATIONS. PHILADELPHIA, June 22.—Shortly after eight.o’clock this morning the woman to the world as the wife of Dr. Isaac Hathaway, entered Police Headquarters.and asked. to see. Chief of Police Givan. When. she saw the Chief she walked up.to. him and.said, “Mr. Givan I told part of my tale of sorrow yesterday afternoon. Since then I have resolved to make things plainer and neet to add more truths to what I said,at that time.” . “I want to say here in the presence of these witnesses,” exclaimed the woman, somewhat excitedly, “that everything I told these detectives yesterday is true in every respect, and I am willing to repeat: the same story to the Coroner to-morrow .. at the inquest. When we lived .. at No. 2,243 North Fifth street, hand somely: ‘dressed women, old and young, rich and poor, came there. Children were born and quickly disposed of.' A chubby life baby would be born.' The heartless wretch would pick up the body——they would be born dead— as if it was an old bucket, or some thing of that.eart and toss it down the cellar steps. Large and ferocious hounds were in the cellar, and you could hear them gnawing and tearing the tender flesh from the little bones. The brutes were allowed to feast on more than one human body, and they seemed to relish the awful men. Then, again, babies would be buried in the cellar and only a few inches of earth thrown over their remains. I don’t think the skeletons and bones have all been recovered, for there were lots of them buried there. Some of the small chil dren were placed in a red-hot stove and destroyer.. While the flesh was burning there would be a most sickening stench for the time, but the Doctor did not ‘seem to ‘mind ‘it. I think that the detectives will find something if they visit the house on Rising Sun Lane, where we formerly lived.” “The detectives were afterward in structed to examine the premises, and they started on their journey, ac companied by physicians, and the al leged wife, who trembles with fear when Hathaway’s name is mentioned The authorities are. awaking’ every ef fort,to obtain the names of persons who are willing to destify, against the old “Doctor,” whois nearly eighty years of age, and it is said several witnesses have been secured who have visited Hathaway for improper pur poses. A MONETER IN HUMAN FORM. Cnicaco, June 22.—At Hyde Park, near South Chicago, that night, Ed ward Weminuler, aged thirty-five, a Belgian, nearly kicked his wife to a jelly over a trifling quarrel. The neighbors complained and the man was arrested. The wife then con fessed that four months ago the brute had killed his four-year-old boy be cause he was forty cents short in change on purchases he had been sent out to make. The corpse had then been buried under the kitchen floor, and from that period vermin had feasted on it daily, filling the whole house with a sickening stench. The police immediately went to the house where they found the remains decomposed and maggot eaten. As soon as the news spread a crowd began to gather in front of the Kensington Jail with ropes, revolvers and clubs until the number reached 5,000. By a stratagem, however, Ser geant Sheridan and Captain Hunt succeeded in getting the man out of the back jail door. The crowd ‘ dis covered this just as the party was boarding an Ilinois Central train. “A grand rush was made to the depot, but the engineer opened the throttle and the train sped away amid hoots from thousands of throats. The man was finally conveyed to Hyde Park Jail twelve miles distant, which is now strongly guarded. His wife is in a critical condition; she married Vermuler in Berlin five years ago. A further statement by the wife shows that the boy, who was a most promising youth, was literally pound ed to death. FIVE MURDERERS EXECUTED. CLARKSVILLE, ARK., June 22.—The four train robbers and murderers, Gore Johnson, James Johnson, James Herndon and Monroe McDonald, all young white men, were executed here today. Their crime was,as follows: On the night of March 12, of this year, a little more than three months ago, the west-bound train on the Lit tle Rock Fort Smith railroad was boarded by a band of four robbers, at a station known as Mulberry, just on the western border of and inside the county of Franklin. They at once began yelling like In dians, and, swinging their revolvers over their heads, ordered the passen gers to hold up their hands. In the midst of the panic caused by their presence Conductor Cain, who had charge of the train, came into the passenger car, and as he approached Jim Herndon shot him and he fell. Milton Lester, a brakeman, then ran to his assistance, when Munroe Mc Donald shot him. Jim Johnson then rushed up to prevent McDonald from ‘ring again, when the latter, in the excitement, fired at Johnson, but missed him. Johnson at once re turned the fire, shooting McDonald in the face, and inflicting a severe wound which crippled him so that he could not escape with the others Finding he could not get away, McDonald as sumed the wounded passenger dodge, in which he was highly successful un til Lester, the wounded brakeman, got eyes on him, and recognized him on sight as the robber who had wounded him during the skirmish. Conductor Cain died almost imme diately when shot, and the killing of the conductor, the wounding of the brakeman, and the crippling of one of their own gang, so demoralized the desperadoes that they abandoned their original purpose of robbing the passengers and hastily retreated, the two Johnsons going in one direction and Herndon in another, leaving Mc Donald, the wounded one, in a farm house near the station, where he was subsequently captured. Gore John son was the chief in planning the robbery, but Herndon was chosen as leader in the attempt. The three escaped to the mountains, but were soon captured, brought here and tried, convicted and sentenced. After trial they were sent to the pen itentiary at Little Rock for safe keep ing until the execution. The four men were all brought here from the penitentiary last night. All said they were, ready to die, and con fessed their crimes, McDonald also confessing that he had killed one other man in Silver City. An immense crowd thronged the streets since day light, but the presence of a company of State guards has presenved the ‘peace. The hanging took place at 1 0’clock. The gallows was located half a mile from the courthouse, in close prox imity to the road bed of the Fort Smith Little Rock railroad, and will remain there as a rough memor ial to train robbers and the law’s vin dication. JERUSALEM, Va., June 22.—Lewis Carter, colored, was hanged here to day for the murder of his wife. The crime was a most brutal one. Carter suspected her of being unfaithful to him,and one night at their cabin home in this (Southampton) county, he upbraided her for such conduct, finally working himself up to such a pitch of anger that he seized a heavy piece of iron and selling her to the floor beat her to death. Carter’s execution took place at noon, the gallows being erected on the west bank of the Nottoway river, where it could be plainly viewed by the crowd of 3,000 people who were present. He confessed the crime, say ing he killed his wife by striking her two blows on the left side of the head with an ax, severing the left ear, while she was asleep, about § o'clock on the night of the 26th of February. last.
