Three of the children were drowned. The oldest twelve 1 years of age, drifted down the stream one p! hundred yards, and lodged against a hang-! ^• j ing willow. He had scarcely crawled up-1 ev k j on it when his little brother came along, | l I but, with the presence of mind perhaps ; ^ . | unparalelled, he caught him, but was un-'4 ’ able to hold him out of the water. While holding his head above the wator, his drowned sister came floating by; he caught her and bold her for some time, but being unable to save both, he lot the body go,_ and rescued the living child until asistance was rendered.The cries of the mother soon brought the neighbors to the spot, but they were all on r j the opposite side of the stream, and could 1, render no assistance until they went to a t! bridge, situate about two miles below to j get across. *A large dog belonging to the family; j*( swam to the woman twice, caught her I * clothes and jerked them several times, and i took a bundle ashore. When he returned, j ^ she gave him the babe, but he failed to get! ^ it ashore, and the child was drowned.By this time her grip began to fail, and she called for help to save her remaining | child. She remained in this perilous situation three quarters of an hour, strugling to save her children before she let them go, and remained there an hour afterward While some were gone to the bridge, those that remained made desperate efforts to reach the sufferers, on horses and by ! swimming, but the current was too strong for them. When those that crossed at the , bridge came to the boys, two of them ! swam to them and got them to the shore is i without difficulty.
