The Western Hockey League’s realignment for the upcoming season will mean a slightly re-jigged playoff format in the Eastern Conference.The WHL board of governors approved the change Wednesday at its annual general meeting With the expansion Chilliwack Bruins joining theWHL in the WesternConference in the fall, the Kootenay Ice will be bumped to the Eastern Conference’s Central Division, in turn pushing the Swift Current Broncos into the Central Division.With six teams, including the Brandon Wheat Kings, in the East Division and five teams in the Central, a possible fifth Eastern playoff spot will openup If the fifth-place team in the East Division earns more points than the third or fourth-place teams from the Central, they will make the playoffs, dropping the fourth-place Central team from the post-season picture.If the Central’s fourth-place team finishes ahead of the Eastern’s fifth-place squad, the playoff format will beunchanged from the 2005-06 season.Meanwhile, the Western Conference playoff format remains unchanged.The league has also opted for a crackdown on obstruction, adopting the NHL’s standards for rule enforcement for the2006-07 season and has announced that it will use thetwo-man referee system in 40 per cent of regular-season gamesall playoff contests in 2007.The league’s board of governors also gave commissioner Ron Robison a vote of confidence, extending his contract for three years.
