WARRENSVILLE HEIGHTS, O. (AP) - The owners of WAKC Channel 23 have applied to move the station’s headquarters from Akron to this Cleveland suburb later this year.Paxson Communicationswants to rent space next to radiostation WCLV FM.The city planning commission has scheduled a public hearing July 8 on the request, if the plan is approved, WAKC wili move to Warrensville Heights in September, station general manager Glenn Schiller said Friday. The building also will house offices for Canton televisionkronstation WOAC Channel 67, which carries infomercials and religious programming. Paxson manages WOAC, which is owned by Whitehead Media.Schiller said WAKC, an ABC affiliate, will continue to be licensed to Akron, although it will be about 35 miles north of the city.WAKC needed more space to accommodate its consolidation with WOAC and their combined staff of 30 employees, Schiller said. Warrensville Heights had both suitable space and a tower for microwave dishes, he said.“The reason is to consolidate both stations into one facility, and the facility in Akron is not nice at all,” he said. “It’s an old, run-down building.”Station officials worked with the city but could not find an appropriate site in the Akron area, he said.Schiller said there are no plans to revive WAKC’s news operation. The station's overall format of ABC programming, syndicated shows and infomercials will remain, he said.Paxson Communications dropped the news operation in February, turning Akron into the largest city in Ohio without local television news. Schiller said the news operation was not profitable for the station.
