But does he swing? Can he equhl Teddy Wilson, Earl Hines, Fats Waller, Count Basie or Mary Lou Williams as a swing-ster? My answer was “No” before I heard Decca Album A-126 of six piano solos by Tatum, and my answer is stll No.In this collection, the famous keyboard star displays ohenom-enal technique and a range of ideas surpassed only by Hines at his best. But except for portions of HUMORESQUE and most of all SWEET LORRAINE, there is little swing present. True, he plays hot most of the time, and on TIGER RAG all but burns up the keyboard, but in general he lacks the ability to swing as does Wilson or a Basie.LIST OTHER SELECTIONSOther selections in this album are Massinet’s ELEGIE, GET HAPPY and LULLABY OF THE LEAVES. All in all, it’s an outstanding group of numbers and merits high praise and wide attention. Tatum is interesting even when he doesn’t swing.Although he leans heavily on Count Basie’s style, Charlie Bar-net does a glorious job with NO NAME JIVE, covering both side* of a Bluebird, and makes on** wonder just what would Basie do with this tune. Barnet has plent' of fire here. . . .Chalk up a success for Joe Sullivan and bis mixed band on Vocalion.
