WILLIAM HARPER DEAWell - Known Soldier and%Citizen Passed Away Tuesday Evening.iWilliam II. Harper, familiarly known to practically everybody in Muskogee as “Uncle Billy” Harper, died at his ;home at K and Jefferson streets, this city, Tuesday evening at half after eight o’clock.*Mr. Harper served during the civil war as a member of the 17th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was a very young soldier even at the close of the war, but he made a most enviable record and Was! discharged from the service as a sharp shooter. He has been very active in G. A. R. circl.es, where • he'will be sadly missed. ;Mr. Harper was an uncompromising protectionist on the tariff question and consequently a loyal Republican. He was several times elected to the office of street com-missioned of Muskogee, being one time elected when the other can-didates on the ticket were defeat-- * * • ’ i • . .ed. He has had some mighty “close shaves” politically but he has come up smiling, a “game loser” when the votes were against him. He had a wide acquaintance in Muskogee and was one of the most popular citizens of the town. The funeral held from the residence Wednesday afternoon was largely attended. Mr. Harper was buried with mid-day honors under the auspices of the G, A. R. A firing squad trom the Spanish War Veterans assisted.• • » * *** . * . •
