Arexcitement here early today. 1 yjPeter Rowley, a well known citi- dazen, was shot and killed at a disorderly house by O. L. Godfrey, ahorse dealer from Spartanburg.According to the report to the police, Rowley was refused admit*Htance to the house, but later succeeded in gaining entrance andpicked a quarrel with Godfrey, inthlt;which the latter is said to have , tU] shot in self-defense. strThe second killing occurred near | pa* _■ ^ •_ . *.the Southern railway station whena negro named Bob Calhoun shotmiintirand instantly killed another negro, sw Will Brown, in a fight over a wo- imman.hi|buPeter Rowley was a well known Lcharacter in Greenville. About 14years ago he shot and killed GusTanner, a young white man, on amoonlight excursion on the C. K. W. railroad. The train wascrowded with ladies and gentlemen |of the best Greenville families, andthe shooting occurred in the pres-aience of the ladies. The trial ofPRowley divided the county in twodfactions, both families being ex-emely influential, but Rowley wasfinally convicted of manslaughterand sentenced to five years in thepenitentiary. He was prosecutedby Solicitor Ansel, now governor,assisted by other counsel. Rowleyserved his term out, professing conversion during his life in the peni-\tentiary, and promising to reform,but returning to Greenville heeventually again fell into evil ways,and a few years ago was implicatedin a charge of murder growing outof the death of a young mountaineer who was forcibly ejected from arestaurant in which Rowley wasinterested. This charge againstPRowley was not sustained.As a youth Peter Rowley wasthe crack athlete of Greenville. Hewas a superb figure on the bars, afine boxer and ball player. Hewas the eldest son of Dr. E. S. S.Rowley, for several terms mayor ofGreenville and for years one of themost popular and inflential citizensof that city. Another son, Mr.Riley J. Rowley, is now chief ofthe Greenville fire department andis highly regarded in Greenville.s
