THE SHADES OF DEATH,The Most Popueak Summer Resort in Indiana,The most popular summer resort in Indiana at the present time is the Garland Dell Mineral Springs, or “Shades of Death.” situated four miles north of YVavcland, Montgomery county. It is one of the grandest bits of natural scenery in the West. The deep chasm, in parts of which the sun never shines, suggested to its discoverer the name it bears. In this chasm are several springs of valuable medicinal qualities. Rut the crowning feature of the place is the Silver Cascade. A small stream, fed by three springs, flows through the chasm and falls in a silvery sheet seventy-five feet down a perpendicular bank of sandstone, into Sugar Creek. This beautiful cascade is nestled away in a cove less than 200 feet high.Two years since, improvements were begun 011 this place, and it was formally opened 011 July 4 last. O11 the pleasure grounds are swing, hammocks, a dancing hall base ball park etc. The best of mineral waters is brought to these grounds from the springs bolow by means of a hydraulic ram. Well kept paths lead to hidden beauties in the shape of fantastic rocks, beautiful ferns and mosses, and show up apparently bottomless ravines. Wide stairways lead down to dark, cool, cavern-like retreats. A dam has been built across Sugar Creek, making excelent boating, and a number of boats are provided for visitors. There is also good fishing hear. A large and el egantly furnished hotel, the Deli House, furnishes the best accomodations at reasonable rates. Camping parties can have their choice of tents, cottages or log cabins, at low rates.The T.
