By CURT NETTING A Plainsman Sports Writer The word is out and the large crowd at SFS Sunday night will attest to it: Ron Droog can be beaten! Randy Schilling of Gettysburg had his car running in top form as he narrowly defeated Droog in the the feature race, snapping Droog’s main event win streak. It was a hotly contested battle throughout, as Schilling took the lead at the beginning and held off Droog on three different occasions to chalk up the victory. Droog started at the back of the pack and managed to work his way up to second before a minor mishap forced him to pit on a yellow flag, a move that automatically sent him to the rear of the 8 car field. Six laps later however, Droog had positioned his car for another shot at the lead. Another yellow flag with two laps to go put Droog right on Schilling’s bumper and the crowd sat on the edge of their seats for the remaining laps. At the drop of the green flag, Droog was again challenging for the top spot but Schilling managed to hold him off and earn his spot in the winners circle. Droog was trying for the triple win as he took his heat race and the trophy dash during the evening’s program. In the sportsman feature it was Dave Marlow of Redfield racing to victory in his first main event win of the 1982 season. Marlow held off the determined efforts of Kent Wilson in a feature race that was marred with accidents and mechanical failures. Doug Myers, Jerry Michel and Gary Steichen all got tangled up in the first turn early in the race. Steichen was able to continue, but the mishap spelled curtains for Myers and Michel. On the very next lap, Bill Picek lost a wheel and the field of cars shrank even smaller. Randy Hickle and Robbin Smidt, both regular winners at SFS had to depart the race for mechanical reasons, Smidt’s was even more disappointing because he was leading the race at the time. Rick Hovde of Willow Lake managed to pull it all together as he won his heat, the trophy dash and the main event in the street stock class. Hovde took the lead on the opening lap and never was seen again, as he raced to a relatively easy feature win. Other heat winners included Todd Becker of Huron in street stock, and Picek, Smith and Sonny L.bburg in sportsman. Rick Aukland of Fargo N.D. made his second appearance at SFS this year and picked up a win in his late model heat race. Mike Hammil of Miller won the street stock consolation, while Marlow took the sportsman con solation. Smith won the sportsman trophy dash. The 2. RANDY SCHILLING
