AN ■ Friday in June, between 4.30 and 5 o'clock in the after-noon, Bernard Bauer, a well-known diamond merchant, wu brutally beaten to death in his office at Modem (now the Southern Cross 1, Chambers, Collins-street.Though the crime was committed during the busiest part of the day, when numbers of people were passing up and down the passages where Bauer’s office was situated, the murderer managed to get away, taking with him Bauer’s wallet containing diamonds valued at £2000, and his gold watch and chain.
