The speeches of the counsel were concluded alout 3 o'clock In the afternoon, and the jury, after hearing the charge of Judge David«on, which was impartial, aide anJ comprehensive, retired for con j auitation, returning in one hour and twenty minute* with the verdict of guilty of murder in tbe first degree, and that the prisoner should suffer death.An ineffectual effort was made hr Davis' attorneys to secure a new trial, but tbe motion was overruled, and on the morning of the 12th the prisoner was brought into court and the following sentence pronounced by Judge Davidson :“M o#es Davis, you were charged in this court, in an indictment found by a grand jury of this county, with the commission of the awful crime of murder. I’pon that indictment you have been put upon trial here before^ a jury of your countrymen ; in that trial you have had the aid of the process of tbe Court, in j lt;securing tbe attendance of all tho witnesses In your behalf that you desired. You have had the assistance of able counsel who have done to you all that human aid could accomplish. You can have no cauae to say you have not been 1 faithfully defended. At every step in tbe investigation of tbe charge arainst you your interests have been zealously guarded, and I believe you have had a fair and impartial trial.
