Dennis Whitted, blues musician, horse trainerDennis Whitted, musician and horseman, a 31-year resident of Pacifica, Calif., formerly 19 years in Chicago Heights, died Tuesday,June 15, in San Francisco, Calif. He was a stable manager for the San Francisco Mounted Police and was a musician with Paul Butterfield’s Blues Band and the o«nnis Whitted Bonnie Raitt Band.Memorial services will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Chicago Heights, with the Eev. Leroy Washington officiating. Interment will be in Mount Glenwood Memory Gardens.Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until time of services Thursday at the church.Mr. Whitted was born July 1, 1942, in Chicago. He attended Lincoln Elementary school and Washington Junior High School in Chicago Heights. He graduated from Bloom High School in 1960 and played in the band every year. He also played basketball, football and ran track, and was active in Student Council and various clubs. After graduating fromBloom, he joined the Marine Corps.He served four years in the Marine Corps in Vietnam and was an active member of the Marine Corps Band.His musical career led him to New York, where he was a drummer with the New York Rock Ensemble, also played with Paul Butterfield’s Blues Band for six years, with Bonnie Raitt for 13 years and with other accomplished artists.He also loved riding and training Morgan and saddle-bred horses, traveling across the country with Joe Parker Stables of Amenia, N.Y., helping the stable win many horse show championships. He also worked at theHenry Kravis estate in Sharon, Conn. Currently, he worked at Golden Gate Park with the San Francisco Police Department mounted unit and participated in training for shows at the Cow Palace.He is survived by his parents, Derothia W. Jett of Richton Park and Fred (Lela) of Park Forest; three sisters, Faiona Coleman of Park Forest, D. Suzette Jett of Dimona, Israel, and Mallory Edwards of Las Vegas, Nev.; three brothers, Michael Whitted and James Jett, both of Harvey and Rev. Malron Jett of Chicago Heights; and a special friend, Cherie Drury of Pacifica, Calif.
