By LES HELGELAND Republic News Service Director FORESTBURG — More than 150 Shorthorn breeders and their fami lies from ax states alended the alinuu! South Dakota Shorthorn and Polled Shorthorn Association field day and picnie held at the Harold McCracken Shorthorn farm nor af here on Sunday. Registered were breeders from South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Indusma and Colorado. A feature of the afternoon's program was the lastatlation of the new 1962-68 Shorthorn bua sie for South Dakota, Mine Ja net Kanage of Webster, and the selection of Kilven Kelsey, wo Fedora as her alternate, Mika Kelsey will assume the time of Shorthorn Lassie for the year of 1982-63 as a similar pifalr to be held at Freelune per June, Elaire Nusstatnn of Aurora, the outgoing Shorthorn Lassie, pre sented the beret to Miss Kanago, who in war gave the alternate’s beret to Miss Kelsey after the election. The olite candidates for the honor of alternate were Siaron Kunghagen of Day, Etypbeck , Roe Heights and Morence Mc Stacken of Forestburg- The program followed a parlock picnic dinner at the McCracken farm. During the program, greet ings were brought by Charles Firginger of Hurley, the president of the South Dakota Association. Ted Aegerton of Omah, repre senting the American Shorthorn Association, was master of cere monies. Mrs. Dave Brockimudller of Greenman served as chairman for ve Shorthorn Lassie compension. Officers of the Association it ad dition to Pliguieer include Dave Brockmedler, vice president and Jin O'Connell of Brookings, secre tary. The new Shordhord Lassie al ternate in the daughter of Seo, vod Mtrs. dagen Kelsey of Fedora. She is th years old and will enroll as a junior at Fe dora High School this fall. Miss Kilsey, who Will serve as the South Dakota Shorthorn Lassie from June of 1963 to June at UkH, has had nine years of 4H work in the Nineve division and seven io me agricultural division She rep resented Miner County that year by the State Pay with an ay don australian and also as a member of the food preservation judging contest. She was named the Miner County 4-H queen based on points scored in the 4-H Achievement Dass competition. After the afternoon's program, an informal program of inspecting the McCracken herd as well as weight-guessing concluded the day. Eileen Kelsey of Fedora (left) was named alternate in the Shorthorn Lassie com petition which was held in connection with the annual summer field day of the South Dakota Shorthorn and Polled Shorthorn Association held at the Harold McCracken farm north of Foresburg on Sunday, June 17. Miss Kelsey will serve as an alternate during the coming year to Janet Kanage of Webster (right) who became South Dako ta's Shorthorn Lassie at the field day to replace Elaine Nussbaum of Aurora (center), who has served in that capacity for the past year during which Miss Kanngo served as her alternate to represent her at various functions involving the Shorthorn Assoc iation. (Republic Photos by Helgeland) There were four candidates for the honor of being named alternate Shorthorn Lassie for South Dakota at the field day. Each spoke to the Shorthorn breeders from the state who in turn cast their ballot with Miss Kelsey (second from left) being named the winner. They are, from left to right, Sharon Klinghagen of Davis, Eileen Kelsey, Erlyn Beck of Ree Heights and Florence McCracken of Forestburg. Visiting briefly during the field day held at the McCracken Shorthorn farm north of Forestburg on Sunday were, left to right, Harold McCracken, Charles Fliginger of Hurley, president of the South Dakota Association; Ted Aegerten of Omaha, repre sentative of the American Shorthorn Association, and Dave Brockmueller of Freee man, vice president of the South Dakota Association. The field day next June will be held at the Brockmueller farm. Some 450 persons attended the field day event.
