CHARLESTON, W.Va. (UPI) One year ago today state officials discovered the biggest theft in West Virginia history—the $352,000 Motor Vehicles robbery pulled off by an unemployed bus driver, who said he did it because it looked Earl Mathews, 32, of nearby Marmet was arrested after about two weeks after the theft, with the money still in the trunk of his car. Mathews readily admitted the crime and was sentenced to 1-to-10 years in prison on a breaking and entering charge. Mathews told how he did it and said it was really simple. He said he went in through a window and hacked his way through the top of the vault. The cash had accumulated during the height of the annual rush for new license plates. The Maryland Casualty Co., Bal timore, offered a $35,000 reward for information leading to the cap ture and conviction of the thief. A citizens committee appointed to determine which of about a dozen claims is entitled to all or part of the reward is scheduled to hold a hearing Friday at the Statehouse.
