has proved to be the case in many instances. Parties procuring tickets for this part of the journey before starting East will not do so the second time; a word to the wise is sufficient. Well after our long journey with but once in a while one we could speak to, it did cheer our hearts to see one of America’s sons. W e went home with him, and it was home indeed, we found in his companion one of those motherly bodies that is sure to brace up and rest tired “pilgrims,” as I assure you we were on our arrival April 30th,1883. - •' The next day we came on to Jeru: salem; I was not a little disappointed in the country both there and here,—as I supposedjt was a bleak, sandy desert: on the contrary, for the first few miles it was orange and lemon orchards (called here gardens) on both sides ofthe road that we passed through, this.part of the trip was in the early morning, and the perfume that was wafted to our nostrils was most delicious, only to be appreciated by those who have the privilege of looking at the golden fruit as it grows, and inhaling itsfragrance.J ust here I would go back a little and warn jtll who travel this way, don’t stop at what is called the “English hotel”, in Marseilles. I paid for this experience. After passing out of the fruitgrowing country we find ourselves in what appears to be an exceedingly fertile, and fine laying country, saw herds of cattle and sheep grazing by the way, but the hundreds of goats in the mountains were reserved till later in the day. We reached the foot of the mountains about 2 o’clock p. m., rested an hour, then commenced winding, and climbing, and kept it.up till 7 o’clock, at which time we reached the top, and Jerusalem, and now after two weeks sojourn here I write you.In what I have to say, I do it regardless of what others may have written on the same subjects. There is one point however that I wish to speak very plain on: and that is the idea of Americans coming to this country to make money; if that is your object don’t come, and I would advise those who have other motives in coming to do so in colonies. Don’t come here expecting to make your living at day’s work. Natives can be bad for 20 cts. per day, and live on what a Chinaman can. Now this may be a little discouraging to some, but I am satisfied that there is existing in the minds of many a very great error, concerning this gathering time. How unjust you would make the Father if he would— as some say—only save those who are able to come here at this time, just be patient a little while,—“He will not tarry”—but bring his reward with him, if yours dear reader is a spiritual body, then perhaps you can come without expense; however I believe the Lord is choosing servants from American soil to be used by him here soon. Such as those will come, and the powers of earth can not prevent, for the Eternal Father will provide ways, and means, and none can hinder. But, while the Lord has been training his servants in the way of truth, Satan, you may depend, has not been asleep. He too looked to America for his agents, and the grandest and most to be dreaded system of error in existence, it comes from America’s Sodom,— Chicago.—This people are known here as the Americans \flho give away considerable money to the poor Jews, and are noted for their good works, etc. They have been here about two years, and have in this way done much good, and to the uninitiated in the way of truth, they would appear to be the most saint-like of all creation. What they claim for themselves they keep pretty close till after their dupes are firmly entraped in their teaching, one Mr. S. claims to be the branch, his wife claims to talk with God, and in their meetings if any one of the members is in doubts as to whether the Lord would have them speak on what is in their minds they refer the matter to her, and she communes with God, and he tells her yes or no, she is the prophetess Anna; while a Mrs. L. has claimed to be John the Baptist, Elijah, Moses and Aaron, and she and S. are the two witnesses of Rev. xi. 7, to he killed in the streets of Jerusalem, etc. Others of the company have received or taken to themselves very high and exalted positions; poor souls filled with pride and self-love and can not see it. It pleased the Lord in a wonderful way to place (s^lf, wife and child) in their house, for about ten days, in fact we left them three days since, the proceedings last Sabbath was all I could stand, and the next morning bright and early*we left them. On the day referred to a Mr. S. who was once a captain in the English army, had a wonderful revelation from God. God had shown him that they as a people, were the body of Christ, that .they were part of the Divine Being and that they were with him before Ihe world was* This, willshow those who realize that they are perishable creatures,—out of Christ— to what terrible depths of blasphemy, that most to be dreaded error “natural immortality” will lead fallen humanity. Corrupt creatures, brute beasts, would make themselves equal with their Creator. I wonder if they don’t imagine sometimes that they will take the throne and God humble himself at their feet. Now this people claim to have power to “heal the sick,” etc., this I think is a fact, and I shall not be at all surprised at any time to hear of greater works than this being done by them, for one of their prophets (?) said to me in our talk on Bible truths that God was soon to answer by fire, that their teaching was truth. They hold that the Millennium period commenced nearly two years ago, and that they areand have been waiting here since that time to be “endowed with power,” to go forth to convert the world to what they call truth; one point of it is the final, full and complete restitution of all creatures to God. Universal salvation, no such thing as second death, in the light that rational men understand it, none to be destroyed. Their kind, or what they call the Holy Ghost, comes with such force that it shakes them up in such a way as to appear to some like a very bad case of swamp ague. After we had been in their house a few days, Capt. S. was “overcome” with this in one of the meetings, and was led to where I was sitting, he placed both hands on my head, I received a pretty lively shaking but sat perfectly quiet till he got through, claimed to have received power to impart to me the H. G., and in a tone of almost thunder demanded Gf the Almighty God that I should receive all the truth; but I, a lump of perishable clay, had power to resist the power of God; how blind are they who fail to see in this the work of Satan. And why should we wonder at this, I am very sure I do not, on the contrary it strengthens my faith, I see in this a fulfilment of prophecy. “And he doth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down irom heaven on the earth in the sight of men.” Rev. xiii. 13. (This they say is soon to be done). For there shall arise false christs, (they are according to their teaching the body of Christ, and claim he is not to come till after the 1000 years, save in them), and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Matt. xxiv. 24. Yes, many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done manywonderful works? Matt. vii. 22.Now these texts plainly .show what we might expect, for the Lord has told us that such things should be prior to his coming, and as I believe the law, the teaching of God and his Christ in its purity, is soon to go forth from here, is it any wonder that Satan is on the ground, with his colors flying? Not at all. And what kind of agents dowe find he has chosen? I will tell you;%they are men and women without question of sound minds, most of them well, and nearly all highly educated; nearly all have come out of some of the popular Churches, four I believe, of the Church of England, i. o., mother and daughters; they are so kind, andattentive to those who come in their*way, always, and for everything praising the Lord. Now would it be possible for Satan to use any other kind of people than these, and deceive all but the class our Lord mentions: the elect. I think not.The time has never been, when the Lord was about to bring about some great work in fulfilment of his word, but what Satan was on hand. And he0is much more familiar with God’s word than many who imagine they are “wholly saved.” That idea is another manifestation of his power to deceive poor, frail mortals, not satisfied to wait till he comes with our reward, but must persist on “climbing up” some other way, I would advise all to try, to strive, to enter in at the gate, for if we may think of the present wall as a type of the new one, that shall come down from God out of heaven, how much nicer it will be to go straight in, then up a flight of steps and gather flowers on the top. (I enclose on, from top of this 70 feet high). For I assure you, dear reader, it would be an exceedingly “up hill business” to get into this city of filth, save by the gates, much more so the one to come. Some may think that I have written in this way of this people, because of personal difficulty with them, but this is not the case, I have talked these things with them in a great deal plainer way than I have been able to write them, they know just where I place them. They have everything about their house in ship-shape, everything in order, servants to do the work, the Lord does not peimifc them to engage in any kind of employment, to earn money, etc.; all of their time is his, but not to get their bread by the sweat of the brow. Believing that they are soon to “go up and down through the earth with this teaching, and that the world and church, is ready for something of this kind, I have written this, for his “coming is afterthe working of Satan with all power.and signs and lying wonders.”So let us all try and make our “calling and election sure,” that we may not be enticed into this parlor, that Satan has draped in purple and fine linen; with this I leave them for now. I will just add th^b if Mrs. Davis has failed to speak of their true character or mission, it was not because she was ignorant of it; she has had a hard row to hoe, and has done all she could; if some of our friends who have plenty and claim to believe in the restitution of all things and that we. are now living in that time, would only send her more money to do with then I think they would be “showing their faith by their works.” I don’t think there is another place on earth where there is as much wretchedness, squallor, and destitution, according to t,he population as here. In the first place the natives are the poorest and most miserable lot of creatures on earth, they are numerous, and “hold the ancient high places in possession.” Ezck. xxxvi. 2. Then add to them hundreds of poor Jews, whom God is now bringing herefrom all parts of the world, think of it—it is a fulfilment of his word. An^they must be fed, and they are his. Then if we are his, what is our duty? Shall we see Christ suffer for food. O! why hold onto the things of this world; time is so short, the Lord has need of money here right now, not when he comes, for it is all his, and as our stewardship is now, so will be our rewrard. Think of this lone woman how she has come here, used all she had in this work, and now she i.s just compelled to lay down her pen, and put in the time climbing over rocks and the mountains to gather and prepare flowers to send to that land of plenty, and churches, that she may in return get money to give out as soon as received to these of God’s poor; who will be the first to lighten her heart now with five or ten dollars, or in such sums as you think is the Lord’s share, and by so doing lift a portion of her burden off and give her a chance to do something else than gather flowers; what is to prevent every reader of these lines, from having a part in this work, if you can’t send large sums, send what you can.And now while I think of it, if some one would take the matter in hand, and in some way, by Get. 1st have money enough sent at onetime to pay ayear’s house rent for her, §50 to §00 would do it; this I think might be done by the readers of Tiie Restitution divided up, and it would come light on all. Houses here are rented by the year, and Turkish year commences with November. Now who will be first to take this matter in hand; I should like so much to hear by letter that it will be carried out. And may God bless those who undertake it.wIn my next I will endeavor to give you, as near as may be, the number ofJews in Palestine, the number ofcolo-.nies, where located, the different countries they are and have been coming from, etc. Ah! how terrible has been their bondage, far worse than that of Egypt, and Moses looking down to this time told the fathers in Iloreb that the Lord would raise up one like unto him, a “deliverer.” May it please the thoughGreat God and Father of all to hasten*the time when that blindness shall drop from their eyes, and these terrible bands be broken.Do Gentiles realize what their fulness really means? More on thisanother time. P. II. Winterstein.ww\vAi\VTIbethtrcaatIdiaiweitlhi
