Davacauu r . •From a notice of the death of Commodore j Tatnall in the Savannah News, of Thursday, we quote as follows:Commodore Josiah Tattnall was bom at Bon*; aventnre, four miles from Savannah, in November, 1796.Ho entered the United States Navy as a midshipman. in 1812, and- received the commission of a Lieutenant in 1818. In February, 1S3S, he was promcted to tho rank of Commander, and in 1850 ho received the commission of Captain. Ho saw his first serriea in the frigate Constellation, and participated In the affair at Cranev Island in Juno, 1813. Ee served in the Algerian war with Decatur, with Perry on the coast of Africa, and waa with Porter in his expedition against the pirates in the Gulf of Mexico. He was in command of tho Spitfire in the bombardment of Vera Cruz in the war with Mexico, and commanded the same vessel in the momorable attacks of Tuspan, Tampico and Alvarado. He was flag officer of the East India squadron from 1856 to 1859, and in the summer of 1859, during the trouble between England and China, with a chartered steamer, in which he was observing the attack on the Pieho forts, towed the British reserves into action at time when the success of tho English seemed doubtful. Afterwards, during the same day, he passed through the hottest firo in a bargo to visit Admiral Hope, who had been wounded. This gallant conduct secured Commodore Tattnall the lasting gratitude of the English, and was approved at Washington, although a palpable branch of neutrality.Inl822, Commodore Tattnall was stationed at Brooklyn Navy Yard; in 18C3 at that of Charlestown, Massachusetts ; at Pensacola in 1850; and ini SCO at Sacketi’s Harbor, New York. In the latter vear he brought the Japanese embassadors to this country.1 He resigned in 18G1, and his subsequent life and services to the Confederate States ut© too well known to need recapitulation.
