PASADENA, Calif., June 19 (2P) -The ghosts of other universes than ours were talked about this week before the American Asso ciation’ for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Edwin Hubble, greatest ex plorer into the vast recesses of the skies, paused in his work at the world’s largest telescope to tell America’s leading scientists about the things he has found. All that is known about these roving island universes is actually ghost information, for it merely is the seeing of them as they were hundreds of millions of years ago. It is because they are so far away that light from them, traveling at the speed of 186,000 miles ,a sec ond takes from 100,600,000 to 250, 000,000 years to reach the earth. Thus, when the world’s largest and fastest camera, at Mt. Wilson, photographs them, the picture is merely what these universes have been that long ago. These nebula, said Dr. Hubble, average about a hundred million times as bright as our sun, but are seen only as faint points of light by the greatest of teles copes. Our own stellar system of some thirty thousand million stars is but one island universe, known as the milky way galaxy, and it spreads over an area of some :960, 000,000,000 000, 000 miles. It is beyond this that the exploration work of Dr. Hubble begins. He revealed that he must look through our universe, and that, at some points there are great ,ob scuring clouds of dust in the milky way galaxy. “There is no evidence of a fad ing ‘out, no‘trace of a “physical boundary,” said Dr. Hubble, in discussing the remote sky regions. “Eliminating the obscuration along the milky way, it is estimated that about thirty millions of is land universes are within reach of the 100-inch Mt. Wilson telescope, averaging nearly a hundred mil lions times as bright as the sun and scattered at average inter vals apart of the order of 1,500,000 light years. One light year is six million of million miles.”
