itaiti]fta:bc;lcbtlAati«■flt;a.ahsiA Memorable Event.—-Thursday, 7 years ago, June 12th, 1877, a collision of a passenuer train and an excursion train occurred near the Point of Roeks.A collision at the beat is a horrible event, but this one in particular wasof more significance to the people of this city than any other could have been. The excursion left this city for Mt. Vernon in high glee over a pleasant trip but how different was their j e] return in the evening. Through a de-! u sire on the part of the conductor of I ^ the excursion to make up lost time he j ran into the Winchester accommoda- j j-tion at the bend near the Point of Rocks. When the news of the disaster reached this city the populace was excited. Stores wore deserted, work suspended and all flocked to the depot to hear the truth of the report. Manyhad friends on the excursion and thetelegraph office was filled with a throng desiring to hear something from the seat of the accident, but the operator at Washington Junction was out. (It is said that word was wired from the Frederick Junction to Washington Junction for the operator to j ^ hold the Winchester train but as no ' ^ operator was present no orders were j b given.) Exagerated accounts of the ' number of killed and wounded were n circulated through the town which ex-cited the people all the more. A train, : with several doctors and a number of 0: citizens on was despatched to the seat of the accident. Between one and f, two o’clock it returned bringing the ; f) dead and seriously wounded. On this ' v, list were tlie dead Louies of Charles ^ H. Keefer, editor of the Examiner. 1 Eugene Dixon, of this city, and a jj voung man by the name of Walker, , c. of Kew Market. Packard P. T. Trail came on the same train and manv who saw him taken from the ( dead car on the stretcher had no idea , that the colonel would be living today. The excursion proper arrived later in the afternoon. -The Freder- . ink City Cornet Band accompanied 11 the excursion. They presented a woe- , c' ful sight on the return. All but three of the members were limping; some had to be assisted along. In the band room can be seen at present a battered drum shell, cymbals, hate, etc., relics of that, never-to-be forgotten event in their history. Hemv Brash ears and Luther Knodie, who have died since the accident, both met their death indirectly from injuries received on that clay.
