In 1852 Charles Gindler, Jr., commissioned a carpenter to build a cradle for his first born, Henry Gind'ler, Sr. Other sons: Louis, Charles. William and Ju-jlius, and daughters: Elizabeth • (Barth), Caroline (Kalina), and (Mary (Reeb) also s^ept in the . cradle.Next to sleep within the Gindler cradle around 1886 was Henry Gindler Sr/s children: Maria (Dol'linger). Theresa (Steinmeyer), Henry Jr., and j Frank. Of these children only 'two used the cradle for their own ’ offspring. Maria Gdndler Dollin-jger’s children: Irwin, Cart, Paul, and Marie, were once rocked to sleep in their grandfather’s cradle. Theresa Gdndler Steinmey-er’s family: Melvin. Darwin and Velma (Franzmeier) also took up short-term residence in the cra-lt;d'le. These seven grandchildren used the cradle around the early 11900’s.Maria Gindler Dollinger’s first grandchild. Daniel Dol'linger, son of Irwin Dollinger* was of the next generation to he placed in the cradle in 1931. Brothers, Robert and Gary also Slept in the Gindler cradle. Daniel Doll-in-ger's son, Neal, and Robert Dollinger’s daughter. Katrina, used the same cradle as did their fathers, around the late 1950's.Today, Charles Gindler’s great, great, great-grandson. Randall Scott Gindler, is using that very same cradle. Made of solid walnut, the cradle is 23 inches wide by 40 inches long and has a 2’ post at each corner. The cradle has undergone only two alterations. Sometime around the first of the 1900’s, Theresa Gdndler Steinmeyer had one side cut and latch bolts installed so as to allow the one side to be put down and to be set next to a larger bed. A canopy once rested upon the four posts, but somewhere along the way’, it got lost,Randall, son of Glenn E. Gindler, is the first ma’le Gindler child since Henry Jr. to use the cradle over a long period of time, Randall’s grandfather, Harold Gindler and great uncles Oscar. There are doubtless dozens of names known only to time of those who have slumbered in the 118 year-old cradle.
