Sitting on “Seven Times Seven Hills.” A Place of Beautiful Scenery and Whore some Water. Pao, ind, June 12, ‘97, To the Herap, The Democratic Editorial Association of the state of Indiana did well. last winter, in accepting Maj. John R. Simp son's invitation to hold the midsummer Meeting at this beautiful little city, sitting upon ite “seven times seven hills, as Major Simpson put all. The editors and their wives met with no moat hearty welcome, and were taken to the Paoli Mineral Springs Hotel, a hotel just finished, well equipped, and run for the accommodation of its patrons. Your correspondent desires to testify to the untiring and subopeffl efforts of the local committee, both Indies and gentlemen, in making our stay in this place most delightful. While this was a meeting of democratic editors, the democrats and republicans , of this place united in welcoming the visitor. This city is noted for its beautiful scenery, and for the best mineral water to be found anywhere. ‘The lithin water comes up from a depth of 1,055 feet, and is cool, clear, and wholesome. It is said to be good for” Keeping the system in general regula tion, good for Brights Disease, good for rheumatism, and many other things. Besides being a healthful resort, this is a lmost plesaant place to stop. The scenary is the finest in the state, and the people are the most hospitable and kind. It is in this, Orange county, where the Lost river is located. The distance from where the river sinks in to the ground to where it appears again is about eight miles. The ground in many places in the county, has sunk down, forming sink holes of various depths. It seems that the ground, be low the surface, is honeycombed with little caves, flowing streams, etc, and once in awhile the ground is let down thus forming sink holes. This is one of the hilliest counties in the state, two thirds of it being covered with hills and small valleys. And yet the people secom e the prosperous, and have made ‘great improvements in the way of building. Paoli is especially well adapted for two things; For rent and recreation, and an a health resort. It is a de lightful place for meetings of j various kinds, where those who resemble desire to unite pleasure with business, ‘his meeting has been pronounced the most successful as well nath a moat pleasant the democratic editors have ever held, and it is due to the beauty of the place and the untiring labora of Major Simpson and his able assistants.
